“A queerer, older, quicker-paced Harry Potter, concerned with the childhood grudges that adults can't get over. “The sharpest female protagonist of the summer”- The Mary Sue Readers won't want to put this one down." - Publisher's Weekly A series of dark reveals that leave both the characters and the audience reeling. And for those who aren't, well, get ready." - Entertainment Weekly "For those familiar with Gailey's work, expect this one to offer familiar pleasures and some new surprises. It’s a must-read for all gothic horror fans." - Booklist, starred review Delightfully creepy and heartbreakingly tragic, Just Like Home is equal parts raw terror of a dark childhood bedroom, creeping revelations of a true-crime podcast, and searing hurt of resentment within a family. This one was a big disappointment after I really enjoyed The Echo Wife last year."Gailey’s newest gothic novel is painfully suspenseful and richly dark, their rushing, intoxicating writing in peak form.

This one is a slow burner that got going closer to the end when the supernatural elements came into play. I was excited to finally get this one the week of Halloween: I was ready for a good, scary story dealing with the past of a serial killer father, but heed my warning above, this novel ended up being not for me! If I had known it was going to go in a supernatural direction, I would have skipped it. Warning: This one goes in a supernatural direction! And I was not looking for that, there was no sign at all about this. Vera must face them, and find out for herself just how deep the rot goes. He insists that he isn’t the one leaving notes around the house in her father’s handwriting… but who else could it possibly be? A parasitic artist has moved into the guest house out back, and is slowly stripping Vera’s childhood for spare parts. It was creepy, it was imaginative, it was super weird, and it never. I loved this book The writing was so wonderful, and the story was so unexpected. I'm so glad that it was, and I'm so glad that I finally got to read a book by Sarah Gailey. While they were alternate history, this is a modern Gothic horror story and is much darker.

Back to face the love she had for her father and the bodies he buried there.Ĭoming home is hard enough for Vera, and to make things worse, she and her mother aren’t alone. Just Like Home was voted as the November read along selection for the Horror Spotlight discord group. I chose this book because I really enjoyed Sarah Gaileys American Hippo books, River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow, but apart from the quality of the writing, Just Like Home has almost nothing in common with that series. In spite of their long estrangement, in spite of the memories - she’s come back to the home of a serial killer. “Come home.” Vera’s mother called and Vera obeyed.
